Leatherback Turtle Moon

The leatherback turtle is the largest of all living turtles. As a sea turtle, the leatherback is the largest and heaviest. It can easily be differentiated from other modern sea turtles by its lack of a bony shell. Instead, the carapace of the leatherback turtle is covered by skin and the turtle's oily flesh. Instead of teeth the Leatherback turtle has fangs. It also has a backwards spine to help it swallow food. Isn´t this an amazing turtle?! De lederschildpad is de grootste schildpad ter wereld en het enige permanent in zee levende reptiel dat tot rond de pool wateren voorkomt. Het is de enige nog levende vertegenwoordiger van de familie lederschildpadden en heeft een vrijwel wereldwijde verspreiding. De lederschildpad behoort ondanks de permanent in zee zwemmende levenswijze niet tot de zeeschildpadden en is eenvoudig te onderscheiden aan het kenmerkende schild door het ontbreken van hoornplaten. Het schild of carapax is in plaats daarvan bedekt met een dikke, olie-houdende laag bindweefsel. Is dat niet een verbazingwekkende schildpad?! A turtle is also a protection symbol. I once made a mandala for my friend Christel, who could use some extra protection at that time , so I choose the largest turtle I could find. Normally when I paint a mandala I pick an animal intuitive but this time I knew I wanted the turtle in her mandala. Een schildpad is ook een symbool voor bescherming. Ik heb ooit een mandala gemaakt voor mijn vriendin Christel, die op dat moment wel wat extra bescherming kon gebruiken, dus heb ik de grootste schildpad gekozen die ik kon vinden. Meestal laat ik mijn intuitie het dier kiezen, maar in dit geval wilde ik beslist een schildpad in haar mandala.

In this mandala I painted a blue Morpho. Many Morpho butterflies are colored in metallic, shimmering shades of blue and green. These colors are not a result of pigmentation but are an example of iridescence: the extremely fine lamellated scales covering the Morpho's wings reflect incident light repeatedly at successive layers, leading to interference effects that depend on both wavelength and angle of incidence/observance. In deze mandala heb ik een blauwe Morpho geschilderd. De prachtige blauwe kleur van de vlinder komt niet door pigment maar door de microscopische structuur van de vleugels. Deze structurele kleur komt tot stand door interne reflectie waardoor alleen het blauwe licht wordt gereflecteerd. Daarnaast wordt blauw licht ook nog verstrekt door licht uit andere delen van het spectrum, dat door de langere afgelegde weg in de vleugel, in een andere fase is gekomen. Dit effect is alleen onder een bepaalde hoek te zien waardoor het lijkt of het blauwe licht wordt uitgezet als met een lichtknopje wanneer de vlinder met zijn vleugels beweegt. De mannetjes zijn feller van kleur dan de vrouwtjes die ook een bruine rand met witte vlekken aan de voorvleugel heeft. De onderzijde van de vleugels is bruin van kleur met verschillende ogen. Turtle Moon

So far I got 7 comments and the same as with the awards, I can't pick anyone! I liked all the suggestions. Some made me laugh, others were original and some very clever. But here is what I will do. I will pick one blind and the rest will receive a postcard from South-Africa. I have 10 cards so Teri, Kim, Suki, Melissa, Diana, Lisa at G,and Julie please step into my office..................... (my office: the internet is so bad here I have to put my laptop outside the window:)) And please send your address to mandarianne@gmail.com.(ASAP, I'm leaving tonight) I have 10 cards to send so hurry there is still room for 3 more. "Inside every older person there's a younger person wondering what happened". Today I bought this book called Furry Logic (wild wisdom) by Jane Seabrook. It really cheered me up. I share the wisdom of the lemur with you. I can relate to what he is saying. Have a nice day!

Title?

No idea what to call this. I have no idea what it is or what I was trying to make. Made a wrong circle first and than another one. Just did something. Maybe I should call it "homesick" ? Any suggestions? I'll send it to the one with the best idea, mailed from South-Africa.(if you give me your address before I leave, or else it will be just a card from Holland). Geen idee hoe ik dit moet noemen. Geen idee wat het voorstelt of wat ik probeerde te maken. Ik begon met een cirkel, die bleek op de verkeerde plaats te staan, die heb ik als shaduw gebruikt. De rest heb ik maar gewoon gemaakt. Misschien moet ik het "heimwee" noemen? Iemand een idee? Ik stuur hem op naar het beste idee, gepost vanuit Zuid-Afrika (als je tenminste je adres mailt voordat ik hier vertrek, anders wordt het gewoon een kaartje vanuit Nederland).

Cactus Monday (#7)

I'm still in Rotterdam and have no access here to my photos, so I made this cactus drawing this morning with my non-dominant hand (left). Normally I don't like drawing with pencils, because I never like the result. With my left hand it is ok and I am not so hard on myself about the result. I see now that the pot is not symmetrycal, but since it is done with my left hand I can live with that. Maybe I can live my life left-handed? Ik ben nog in Rotterdam en heb hier geen toegang tot mijn foto's, dus heb ik vanmorgen dee tekening gemaakt met mijn linker hand. Normaal gesproken hou ik niet van tekenen, omdat het resultaat me nooit bevalt. Met mijn linker hand ben i sneller tevreden en niet zo kritisch. Ik zie nu wel dat de pot helemaal niet symmetrisch is (iets waar ik normaal helemaal niet tegen kan, maar wat ik nu wel kan accepteren. Misschien kan ik mijn leven ook eens een poosje links leiden?

Jeannet

This mandala I made for Jeannet. She had her birthday yesterday. I gave it to her thursday because I had to go to work yesterday. I´m in Rotterdam now in my brothers house, waiting for the phone to ring. I´m standby for 5 days! Yesterday I spent the day at my parents and in the evening my brother and his boyfriend invited me for pizza (I love pizza!!!!) It is nice to spend time with the family but being standby isn´t the favorite part of my job. I have to be able to be at Schiphol within one hour and that is impossible from where I live. Deze mandala heb ik voor Jeannet gemaakt. Ze was gisteren jarig , mar ik heb de mandala donderdag alvast gegeven, want ik moest vrijdag werken. Ik sta 5 dagen reserve, het minst leuke deel van mijn baan. Wel leuk om weer de familie te zien; gisteren een dag bij mijn ouders geweest en s'avonds ben ik met mijn broer en zijn vriend pizza gaan eten (ik ben gek op pizza!!!). Ik ben nu in Rotterdam in het huis van mijn broer, ik moet binnen een uur op Schiphol kunnen zijn en dat lukt niet vanuit mijn huis. Dragonfly symbolism crosses and combines with that of the butterfly and change. The dragonfly symbolizes going past self-created illusions that limit our growing and changing. Dragonflies are a symbol of the sense of self that comes with maturity. They are fantastic flyers, darting like light, twisting, turning, changing direction, even going backwards as the need arises. Some people who have the dragonfly as their totem have had emotional and passionate early years, but as they get older they achieve balance with mental clarity and control. They gain an expression of the emotional and mental together. Dragonflies are old and adaptive insects, and are most powerful in the summer under the effects of warmth and sunlight. Their colors are a result of reflecting and refracting the power of light. As a result, they are associated with color magic, illusion in causing others only to see what you wish, and other mysticism. The are often represented in Japanese paintings, representing new light and joy. To some Native Americans they are the souls of the dead. Faerie stories say that they used to be real dragons. Dragonflies are reminders that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we choose to do so. "Let there be light" is the divine prompting to use the creative imagination as a force within your life. They help you to see through your illusions and allow your own light to shine in a new vision. Waterjuffer / Libel Is de waterjuffer vandaag in je leven verschenen dan is de tijd gekomen dat je eigen ware kleuren doorbreken. Waterjuffer brengt jou een boodschap van wijsheid en verlichting. Het is tijd om oude gewoonten op te sporen die verandering behoeven en deze los te laten of te veranderen. De kracht van de waterjuffer zal je helpen door de mist van illusie te dringen naar de weg van transformatie en verandering. Nara Marina

We returned yesterday from our trip to Friesland. Friends of ours live in the picturesque village IJlst. This mandala I painted for their youngest daughter Nara. Wat a cutie she is! Used symbols in this mandala: spiral, four leaf clover, cats, star and heart . In terms of spirituality, the spiral symbol represents the path leading from outer consciousness (materialism, external awareness, ego, outward perception) to the inner soul (enlightenment, unseen essence, nirvana, cosmic awareness). In terms of rebirth or growth, the spiral symbol represents the consciousness of nature beginning from the core or center and thus expanding outwardly. This is the way of all things, as recognized by most mystics. Gisteren zijn we terug gekomen van ons tripje naar Friesland. Vrienden van ons zijn daar in het pitoresque IJlst gaan wonen. Deze mandala was voor hun jongste dochter Nara. Wat een schatje overigens! Gebruikte symbolen in deze mandala: spiraal, klavertje vier, katten,ster en hart. Spiraal: teken van de reis van het innerlijke leven en de ziel naar buiten. Het staat ook voor groei, expansie en kosmische energie.. These pictures of Sjimmie were taken while I was painting the mandala, but I couldn't show you them at the time. I love the black against the colorful background. Deze foto's zijn van Sjimmie genomen toen ik met de mandala bezig was, maar ik kon ze destijds niet laten zien. Ik vond dat zwart geweldig tegen die kleurrijke achtergrond, ze verterken elkaar. BTW Sjimmie is doing fine. Here is a picture taken just now. His eyes have turned olive green. Sjimmie doet het goed. Deze foto heb ik net gemaakt. Zijn ogen zijn inmiddels olijfgroen.

Suki , Andrea and Kim have posted art made with non-dominant hand. This is my drawing made with my left hand. When Kim asked her readers to give it a try I was interested at once. As a child I found pleasure in writing with 2 hands at the same time and did all sorts of experiments, like writing upside down and from right to left etc. Yes a bit weird I must admit...... So this experiment was fun, it has been a long time since it tried anything left, except when painting my walls, then I always use both hands (not at the same time). Suki , Andrea en Kim hebben werk gepost gemaakt met hun niet dominante hand. Dit is mijn tekening gemaakt met links. Toen Kim haar lezers vroeg of zij zin hadden om dit te proberen was ik meteen geinteresseerd. Als kind deed ik allerlei experimenten, zoals schrijven met 2 handen tegelijk, ondersteboven schrijven of in spiegelschrift of ondersteboven en in spiegelschrift tegelijk.. Ja ik geef toe een beetje vreemd. Dit experiment was leuk, het resultaat viel me mee. Het is lang geleden dat ik iets met links gedaan heb, behalve het schilderen van de muren hier, dan gebruik ik altijd allebei de handen (maar niet tegelijk hoor). PS; We are having problems with the electricity, we have had no internet the whole day! Tomorrow before we leave to Friesland, where we will visit friends and deliver a mandala for their daughter. Wednesday I realy hope to catch up with blogging. PS; We hebben problemen met de electriciteit en hierdoor bijna de hele dag geen internet gehad! Morgen gaan we naar Friesland, waar we vrienden gaan bezoeken en een mandala meenemen voor hun dochter.Woensdag zijn we terug en dan hoop ik echt wat in te halen wat bloggen betreft.

Four artists were given 5 hours, along with paint brushes, pens, pencils, a hairdryer, ink, acrylic paint, water color, markers, and collage. They were told simply, "Do your thing and play off each other," with each starting at a different corner of the canvas. I have had a busy week and have been away a lot. Orchids

I noticed some orchid lovers among you so here is a mandala I painted a while ago for Marlou. Marlou wants to emigrate to Finland, I wanted to paint a nordic mandala but it turned out completely tropical......... Het viel me op dat er nogal wat orchidee liefhebbers onder jullie zijn , dus hier een mandala die ik een tijdje geleden heb geschilderd voor Marlou. Marlou wil ooit emigreren naar Finland. Ik wilde een noordelijke mandala schilderen, had ideeen over poolvossen etc, maar de mandala werd compleet tropisch......... Phaelaenopsis (butterfly) Orchid , symbol of love and beauty. Phaelaenopsis (vlinder orchidee), symbool van liefde en schoonheid. This orchid was a gift from my Finnish friend Aulikki. Deze orchidee heb ik van mijn Finse vriendin Aulikki gekregen. In Bangkok I bought a huge box with orchids! In Bangkok heb ik een grote doos orchideeen gekocht. Orchids everywhere! Het hele huis staat vol! I love orchids! Ik hou van orchideeen!
