Happy Birthday Anna

Today is Anna's birthday. She's my cousin (and in my heart my sister) from Sweden. When I turned 40 Anna came to Holland and I promissed her I would come to Sweden on her 40th birthday. Anna has to work (late) today, so I will go tomorrow. I will travel with my father who has turned 80 this month. He will visit his brother (Anna's father) and of course we will see the rest of the family. It's always good to go back home, Sweden feels as my second home. Vandaag is Anna jarig. In Anna's mandala, which I painted a few years ago, there is a lot of purple and violet because she has 7 and 8 in her numbers. "Coincidently" these are also Anna's favorite colors. One of the symbols I used in this mandala is the hand of Fatima, also called Hamsa. The hand symbol is called the Hand of Fatima by Muslims, named for the daughter of Mohammed, and is sometimes said to symbolize the five pillars or tenets of Islam. In Jewish use, it is sometimes called the hand of Miriam, after the biblical heroine. The eye in hand is considered a powerful talisman againt the 'evil eye,' and is usually worn around the neck or hung on walls or over the doors of homes and businesses. Links: Anna About.com Wikipedia

  1. Hope you have fun celebrating! I love this mandala and the colors. I love the Hamsa symbol and got one a year or so ago and put it up as a good luck charm in our front window. As I was putting it up I noticed our chickens were loose in the front yard! I never would have known and who knows where they would have ended up if it weren't for the Hand/Hamsa symbol.
