Koekie & Droppie

Finally today it is spring! The sun is shining, birds are singing. My Shih Tzus Koekie (=Cookie) and Droppie (=Liquorice) had a haircut today. Almost ready for spring, next month they will be cut very short. Eindelijk is het lente vandaag! De zon schijnt en de vogeltjes zingen! Mijn Shih Tzu's Koekie en Droppie zijn geknipt. Bijna klaar voor de lente, volgende maand worden ze echt kort geknipt

Eveline

This mandala I painted about 6 years ago, it is one of my first mandalas. Eveline gave me a mandala as a present for my 40th birthday. It was drawn by Beika Kruid, who really makes fabulous birth and other mandalas. I immediately became enthusiastic and wanted to try it for myself. When I visited Beika I bought two course books and started the same week. I am convinced that receiving a mandala brings something positive around and for me it was the incentive to make them myself. This opened a road full of new positive experiences and contacts. This is how I started painting mandalas. So one of the first mandalas I made had to be for Eveline. Today is Eveline's birthday. She turned 50! Congratulations dear friend! Deze mandala heb ik ongeveer 6 jaar geleden geschilderd. Het is één van mijn eerste mandala's. Eveline gaf me in dat jaar een mandala voor mijn 40e verjaardag. Gemaakt door Beika Kruid, die werkelijk schitterende geboorte- en gewone mandala's maakt. I was meteen enthousiast en wist gelijk dat ik dit ook wilde doen. Toen Eveline en ik mijn mandala bij haar ophaalden heb ik meteen 2 cursusboeken van haar gekocht en ben aan de slag gegaan. Ik ben er van overtuigd dat wanneer je een mandala krijgt dit iets positiefs teweeg brengt. Voor mij was dat het de aanzet om ze zelf te maken. Dit opende een weg vol nieuwe positieve ervaringen en ontmoetingen. Zo ben ik dus met mandala's schilderen begonnen. Dus ik vond dat één van mijn eerste mandala's voor Eveline moest zijn. Vandaag is eveline jarig. Ze is 50 geworden! Gefeliciteerd lieve vriendin!

Mouse / Muis

This is Muis (=Mouse), who died a few years ago. I painted her in a nurse outfit, because she was like a kind of nurse to all of us. Whenever someone was ill or sad she would lay down beside or on top of the person and began to purr, this would certainly make you feel better. Dit is Muis, die een paar jaar geleden gestorven is. Ik heb haar de dag na haar dood geschilderd in een verpleegster-outfit, omdat ze als een soort zuster voor ons allemaal was. Als één van ons ziek was of verdrietig kwam ze naast of bovenop je liggen en ging dan spinnen. Iets wat je herstel wel moest bevorderen.

Desert Rose

When I made my 2 worlds post I was looking for the Latin name of the Desert Rose (Adenium Obesum) I found a lot of pictures of desert roses. I clicked on this one becuase I love the light painted in these flowers. The painting is made by Lynne Fischer. I enjoyed her site very much, it gave me the feeling of summer. Toen ik het stukje maakte over 2 werelden, zocht ik de Latijnse naam van de Desert Rose (adenenium Obesum) and via Google vond ik allerlei desert roses. Één daarvan trok mijn aandacht door het licht wat ik daarin geschilderd zag. Het is gemaakt door Lynne Fischer. Ik heb genoten van mijn bezoek aan haar site, het gaf me een zomers gevoel. Another desert rose is this one, also known as the Sand Rose or the Rose de Sable in French. It is a curious display of gypsum crystals that grow from mineral rich ground water beneath the surface of desert sand. Een andere Desert Rose is deze woenstijnroos (ook wel zandroos genoemd). Het is een mengvorm van het mineraal gips en zandkorrels die zijn ingebed in het kristalrooster van dat mineraal. Woestijnrozen worden ook wel gevormd met bariet. Het is geen zuiver mineraal en in strikte zin ook geen gesteente. I wanted a desert rose for my home, but here they are very hard to find, so when I asked in flowershops they often came with a Kalanchoë Thysiflora, which is also beautiful and a desert rose again............... Toen ik op zoek was naar een desert rose voor thuis, bleek dat deze niet zo makkelijk te krijgen zijn in Nederland. In de winkel kwamen ze vaak met een Kalanchoë Thysiflora aanzetten, ook een mooie desert rose........ I always have this wonderful song in my head by Sting (feat. Cheb Mami) whenever I see or hear the word desert rose. I love this song! Ik heb altijd het wonderschone lied van Sting (met Cheb Mami) in mijn hoofd als ik een desert rose zie of het woord hoor. Ik hou van dit nummer!

Two Worlds / Twee Werelden

Within 48 hours I witnessed heat and snow. Friday I left for Dar es Salaam to accompany our neighbours Kitty and Job to Kilimanjaro, where we made an intermediate stop. I spent 24 hours in this beautiful country Tanzania. Too short, but long enough to defreeze. My first (warm) sun since November! I enjoyed it very much! Binnen 48 uur heb ik hitte en sneeuw ervaren. Vrijdag vertrok ik naar Dar es Salaam om onze buren Kitty en Job naar Kilimanjaro te brengen, waar we een tussenlanding maakten. I was 24 uur in mooi Tanzania. Veel te kort natuurlijk, maar voldoende tijd om even te ontdooien. Mijn eerste (warme) zon sinds november! Ik heb er van genoten; 36 graden, helemaal mijn klimaat! Near the pool this peacock family entertained me. Mother with 3 chicks, the kids searching for food and sunbathing while mum was on the lookout. When I came home my deers were walking in the snow. It is supposed to be spring here.......... Bij het zwembad heb ik me geamuseerd met deze pauwen familie, moeder met 3 kuikens, de kinderen scharrelden naar voedsel en namen een zonnebad terwijl moeder op de uitkijk stond. Toen ik terug kwam liepen onze hertjes in de sneeuw, terwijl het eigenlijk lente hoort te zijn......... Two gardens. I wish the first one was mine, but it's the one covered with snow. Twee tuinen. Ik wou dat de eerste de mijne was, maar het is de tuin met de laag sneeuw. Ik heb ook desert roses thuis en die doen het net als ik; ze proberen te overleven in het verkeerde klimaat. Snowploughs on my way home today. Sneeuwschuivers op weg naar huis vandaag. Mandala Time

Finally, I sent Marinka's mandala to Paris last week. I started the mandala last year and it has been on my easel for a very long time. I couldn't paint that often and painting nine different butterflies is more time-consuming than 9 identical. Eindelijk heb ik de mandala van Marinka naar Prijs gestuurd. Ik ben vorig jaar aan de mandala begonnen , maar door omstandigheden heeft de mandala wel heel erg lang op mijn ezel gestaan. Bovendien kost het schilderen van 9 verschillende vlinders meer tijd dan 9 dezelfde. In the middle I painted the winged heart, a symbol of the Sufi movement, a mystic branch of Islam. The heart is between soul and body, a medium between spirit and matter. When the soul is covered by its love for matter it is naturally attracted to matter. This is the law of gravitation in abstract form, as it is said in the Bible, ‘Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.’ When man treasures the things of the earth his heart is drawn to the earth. But the heart is subject not only to gravitation, but also to attraction from on high, and as in the Egyptian symbology, wings are considered as the symbol of spiritual progress, the heart with wings expresses that the heart reaches upward towards heaven. In het midden heb ik een gevleugeld hart geschilderd, een symbool van de Soefi beweging ; het hart is gevleugeld, wat symbool staat voor een bevrijd hart. Religie, zo stelt de soefi levenswijze, mag namelijk niet onderdrukkend werken, maar is bedoeld om bevrijdend te zijn. A colorful home

Searching for something else I found this photo on my pc. No idea where it comes from or who made it..............but I guess I just stored it. I can image that after a boring day at the office (or at a course like I did today and spending more than 5 hours in trafic) the sight of your home makes you forget all the misery. Op zoek naar iets anders vond ik deze foto op mijn pc. geen idee waar hij vandaan komt of wie hem gemaakt heeft.....................(sorry maker), maar ik heb hem gewoon eens opgeslagen. Ik kan me voorstellen dat als je na een saaie kantoordag of een cursusdag zoals ik had en waarbij ik meer tijd achter het stuur heb gezeten dan in de schoolbanken, je alle ellende vergeten bent bij de aanblik van dit huis bij thuiskomst.

Phantom / Spook

This is Spook (=Phantom) Her real name is Nikki, but I call her Spook. It seems like she can walk through doors. She is a master in hiding and getting herself locked in. She is a good communicator, although half of the time I can't understand her orders (but that is my fault....). She lets us open the backdoor for her and within seconds she is inside again entered through her own pet door. Spook is funny. Dit is Spook. Ze heet eigenlijk Nikki, maar aangezien het lijkt alsof Nikki door deuren en muren heen kan lopen, noem ik haar Spook. Ze is meester in verstoppen en zichzelf laten opsluiten. Ze is een goede prater, maar helaas voor haar, begrijp ik de helft van de tijd haar orders niet (maar dat ligt natuurlijk aan mij). Ze laat ons de achterdeur openen voor haar en binnen seconden staat ze weer binnen, gewoon omgelopen en door het kattenluik naar binnen gekomen. Ik denk dat het laten openmaken van deuren is bedoeld als bezigheidstherapie voor ons mensen. Wij vinden Spook erg grappig. PS Here is the original photo

Unfortunately the photo isn't that good. The paintings were behind glass so the flash is too much, but maybe you get the idea this way. When you click on the painter in the post you can see in the enlargement (in the right lower corner) a piece of the painting as well. I also found a video on YouTube, which explains it better. Lotus

The last picture of Lotus. Yesterday I buried my sweet Lotus, 17 years old. 17 Years ago we got her and her brother from the shelter. They were farm-cats, sick and shy. Lotus and her brother Maan (Moon) turned out happy and healthy cats and they were so gentle, not the average barncat but with aristocratic blood in their veins. Maan died two years ago. I buried Lotus next to Nisse who was the love of her life. Today I bought a pink camelia for her. It hurts to loose a dear pet, but I am also grateful for all the sweetness, fun and love she surrounded me with all these years. Thanks little princes.

Shanghai

In Shanghai I visited the Jade Buddha Temple. This is one of the most popular temples and contains two jade Buddhas (and lots of other Buddhas). The large one is crosslegged (sitting) and the other smaller one reclining. It is not allowed to take pictures of the main Buddha by visitors so this one I googled (the rest of the photos I took myself). This man painted with the side of his hand and fingernail. Some impressive Buddha statues. The main reason I wanted to visit this temple complex is that they have a Quan Yin temple, I have a fascination for Quan Yin. Quan Yin is one of the most universally beloved of deities in the Buddhist tradition. Also known as Kuan Yin, Quan'Am (Vietnam), Kannon (Japan), and Kanin (Bali), She is the embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. I was fascinated by the trees over there, they were all pruned in a strange way, like they were randomly mutilated and it seems as if they never will come to life anymore. The second tree blossoms all year long :) Old and New. The reclining Buddha. Just like in Holland you see a lot of bikes, but cyclists like these you don't see around in my country........

Back to Work

Tomorrow I will go back to work again, after 3 months! In december I had my winter vacation and in the last week I injured my leg while playing tennis. I have torn my calf muscle. Now I´m able to walk and work again. I'm not allowed to play tennis until the end of this month (the muscle is still not completely healed). A disaster for me, that's why all of a sudden I had a lot of time to spend at my computer and I started blogging, updated my site, made YouTube videos, started a mandala hyve, learned to rotoscope pictures and so on. The "extended" holiday is over, back to reality. But I start with a trip to Shanghai, I look forward to that. I love the Far East! So Tuesday I will have a real Chinese diner, I love oriental food as well. I will spend 2 days in Shanghai. Besides shopping I will try to see something interesting as well so I will take my camera with me. From now on I will not post as often as before but I hope I will still see you around!

Sea Mandala

In this mandala for Isa, I used sea symbols. Isa is a cancer, so these symbols go well with her zodiac sign. In the middle the cancer zodiac symbol in orange and a blue starfish, surrounded by 6 white pearls, then the magnificent Orange Foliosa Coral, three golden suns, airbubbles and the lotusleaves. From the depth of the sea the mandala comes to the surface. The unique luster of pearls depends upon the reflection and refraction of light from the translucent layers. The thinner and more numerous the layers in the pearl, the finer the luster. The iridescence that pearls display is caused by the overlapping of successive layers, which breaks up light falling on the surface. The pearl is an astral stone for the signs Gemini and Cancer, and astrologers link it to the moon. It was said in some early cultures that the pearl was born when a single drop of rain fell from the heavens and became the heart of the oyster. Pearls have been called the 'teardrops of the moon'. Some believe that pearls were formed by the passage of angels through the clouds of heaven. Over time, the pearl has become the symbol of purity and innocence and it is often sewn into bridal gowns, or worn as jewelry by the bride. The orange Foliosa Coral I painted from a photo made by Dave Playfair. Never knew anything like this existed! While searching for something I stumble upon things sometimes which are so fascinating.
