Animal Wednesday

Just a few days ago Chris did a post on a journal page  and in my comment I told her I never had ducks in my garden because it is too small and enclosed.
Just one day later I looked outside my window and what did I see in my pond?!
Yes a duck couple! I was so surprised .
I took the pictures from behind the window so they are not very sharp.....
Oops........ predator on the premises..........
The duck flew away and went to the drinking well

just behind our garden. Maybe you can see them
 when you enlarge the pictures.
And this is Wodan....................I must admit Rottweilers are not my favorite breed. I have a history with this breed. My Pekingese Gijs (20 years ago) was nearly killed when attacked on the beach by 2 of them. My Dad was beaten up by a Rottweilers boss when he tried to rescue the same dog out of the teeth of another Rottweiler. The neigbors Rottweiler nearly killed the Chihuahua from my friends daughter just 100 meters from my house and later that  year he killed a Sheltie just in front of my door. So no wonder this is just not my favorite dog......
Yesterday I went to paint our boat in the shed in the countryside and Wodan is the watch dog there.
He is just so friendly and last year he licked my arms while I was painting the anti fouling. This year he came to greet us and I made him sit give a high five and gave him cookies. He was my friend yesterday and I must admit I like Wodan. And my DH who is terrified of dogs likes him too and isn't afraid of him!

You can't tell in this picture but believe  me he is huge!!!!!

Happy Animal Wednesday :)

  1. I'm glad you saw some ducks in your pond - maybe they are the ones that went missing from our lake? We're down to 3 from 6 ducks and a goose to 3 ducks...hope nobody's getting frustrated about not catching any fish and deciding they'll have duck for dinner instead! (you just never know!)
I love all dogs and if I'm a bit skeptical and hesitant about bigger dogs is because it depends how they are reared and a responsible dog owner would not raise an aggressive dog - or at least keep him contained if he knew this about his dog. I'm very sorry for that...it would have been detrimental for me as well. Once, when I was a small child walking to school, I met a big, black dog (maybe a Rottweiler or a Lab - I can't remember it was so long ago in Germany) when he stood there in front of me, I fed him my entire sandwich I had for lunch figuring maybe if he's not hungry, he won't eat me LOL (well, it worked - I'm still here!)

    1. Hahaha, I guess I thought the same when I saw him. But I am afraid those few cookies aren't enough to still his hunger. Guess he had breakfast :)

  3. Don't ever say never. Ducks are unpredictable. Fun to have one in your pond. Just goes to show that not all Rotts are mean. HAW.

  5. Hmmmm..is is possible Mr. and Mrs Mallard flew from Zierkizee to Oregon to SF? Those Ducks really get around!!!! A-ha-ha The shot with the Furry *Predator* on the hunt is too cute!

Sometimes I feel uneasy about *Rotties*, just as I do *Pitbulls* and Dobermans.... but I know it isn't the breed that makes a dog vicious - but the owner. Still, you have good cause to fear them....Wodan is pretty adorable though and glad Germain likes him too. (I was attacked by a Doberman when I was three.....the only time I can reacall an animal disliking me....it was scary...but I was ok. I do my best to like Dobies....but the faint memory of fear is always lingering - a bit.

Here's to all animals having loving owners!!!!

    HAW!

    1. I have a weak spot for Dobermans....... In the shelter they were always fond of me. They are a bit nervous though.
But I do prefer small dogs :) Easier to handle ;)

    2. If I could, I'd love to have a German Shepherd. I grew up with one and she was my Nanny out in the country. She protected me and my Oma when the men were off to work - we had no phone, car or any neighbors, so the dog had a big responsibility and she did her job well :-)

  7. Ducks in your pond - how cool! We had a fox in our back yard this morning. We wanted to let our big dog out (a mix of who knows what all) and the fox ignore us when we tried to shoo him away. Just kept looking for grubs in the grass. :)) Glad you've met a nice Rott and he is your friend.

  8. Ducks!!! They would be a nice addition to your pond if they don't eat your fish and if your cats don't eat the ducks! The food chain :)

Rotties have been overbred (like many dogs) and many of them end up aggressive. Shame on the people whose dog kept attacking and nearly killing little dogs. I wonder how many cats he may have attacked? And Robin is right. It's mainly ignorant people who own them.

    Good boy Woden!

  9. I can't agree with robin and lo about rotties or pitbulls. Even with the best owners, there is always a chance of harm to other dogs and small children etc because of their instinct/ability to snap a neck. I have known several pitbulls and I quite love them: they are the sweetest and gentlest dogs. But I am always careful because of that 1% chance....there are so many waiting to be adopted and it makes me sad. But I can't convince jb to take such a chance: I would be nervous too...

Okay, nuff said. :-(. How neat that you have visiting ducks. And you are painting your boat?! You are painting some pretty cool things, Marianne!!!

    Happy for you ♥

    1. I am always afraid of that 1% too. I would never take a risk.
Please adopt a child friendly dog, there are so much others there too. I hope they all find wonderful bosses, each in a suitable home and situation.

  10. Nice or no, I do NOT like this breed either! The nice ones are just too few and I don't trust them.
Love your ducks and what a coincedence they showed up when they did.

  11. oh how awesome! ducks in your backyard! that would be a real treat. i am really afraid of big dogs, no matter the breed, it's an unexplainable fear, but i give them all lots of respect.
