I was in Suriname last week, only for 24 hours.
After breakfast I walked towards the Suriname River convinced I would find a cactus for Monday.
And I did!
A cactus in the jungle.....
It's spines would make you think it is a cactus, but it is a succulent.
(crown of thorns)
My grandmother had a huge one when I was little and I loved those flowers
(picture from the internet)My Grandma's looked more like this one.
I remember I picked the flowers and white milk came out of them.
I only found out today that they are part of the Spurge family (Euphorbiaceae): a large family of flowering plants with 300 genera and around 7,500 species. Most are herbs, but some, especially in the tropics, are also shrubs or trees. Some are succulent and resemble cacti.
Happy Cactus Monday!
Beautiful plants and flowers! Succulents and cacti just seem to go so well together! Both are beautiful and many succulents have spines too.
ReplyDeleteThe first pic - looks like a really nice place, so green. I like the Euphorbia milii - pretty.
